Engagement sessions in Malibu offer the perfect combination of breathtaking scenery, natural light, and a relaxed coastal atmosphere. From the dramatic cliffs and golden beaches to rolling hills and canyon landscapes, Malibu provides an incredible variety of backdrops that allow every couple's story to be captured in a unique and authentic way. Whether you're envisioning a romantic sunset session by the ocean or an adventurous walk through scenic trails, Malibu creates an unforgettable setting for engagement photos that feel timeless and genuine.
One of the things I love most about photographing engagement sessions in Malibu is the diversity of locations available within a short distance of one another. We can explore the rugged beauty of Malibu Canyon, wander through the picturesque landscapes of Malibu Creek State Park, stroll along the iconic Malibu Pier, or take in the stunning ocean views along the Malibu Coast. For couples who dream of dramatic coastal imagery, El Matador Beach offers some of the most spectacular scenery in Southern California, with its sea caves, rock formations, and unforgettable sunsets.
Malibu has always been one of my favorite places for engagement sessions because it effortlessly blends adventure, romance, and natural beauty. Every location feels unique, and the ever-changing light along the coast creates magical moments that simply can't be replicated anywhere else. I love helping couples experience these incredible settings while creating photographs that reflect their connection, personality, and excitement for the journey ahead. Whether we're hiking through the canyons or watching the sun dip below the horizon at El Matador Beach, Malibu never fails to inspire beautiful, meaningful images.

Malibu is a dream location for engagement sessions thanks to its breathtaking mix of sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs, rocky coves, and sweeping ocean views. Locations like El Matador State Beach and Point Dume provide stunning backdrops that feel both romantic and cinematic, while the area's famous golden-hour light creates warm, flattering images that are perfect for capturing authentic moments.
What makes Malibu especially unique is the variety it offers within a short distance. Couples can move from coastal trails and scenic overlooks to sandy shorelines in a single session, creating a diverse gallery of images. Combined with its relaxed atmosphere, year-round beauty, and iconic Southern California charm, Malibu delivers an unforgettable setting that feels both adventurous and effortlessly romantic.
The best time of year for an engagement session in Malibu is typically from late spring through fall, with September and October often considered the ideal months. During this time, the weather is warm, the skies are usually clear, and the coastline is less affected by the marine layer that can create overcast conditions in early summer. The sunsets are especially beautiful, providing the golden light Malibu is known for.
Spring (March–May) is also a wonderful option, offering mild temperatures and greener hillsides from seasonal rainfall. Summer brings warm beach weather but can be busier with tourists, while winter sessions can be beautiful and more secluded, though temperatures are cooler and weather can be less predictable. For the most consistent conditions, stunning sunsets, and fewer crowds, September and October are generally the best months for an engagement session in Malibu.
A combination of Malibu Canyon and El Matador Beach is my favorite for engagement sessions because it offers the best of both worlds! We can start among the rolling hills, golden grasses, and dramatic mountain views of Malibu Canyon, showcasing Southern California's natural beauty. Then, as the light softens, we head to El Matador Beach for its iconic sea cliffs, rugged rock formations, and breathtaking ocean sunsets. The variety between these two locations allows for a diverse gallery that feels both beautiful and adventurous, giving couples a beautiful mix of landscapes.
Most couples schedule their engagement session 6–12 months before their wedding. This timeline gives you plenty of flexibility for save-the-dates, wedding websites, guest books, and other wedding-related materials.
If you'd like to use your photos for save-the-dates, I recommend scheduling your session at least 8–10 months before the wedding to allow time for editing, design, and printing. Fall and spring dates tend to book quickly, so planning ahead can also help you secure your preferred season and location.
