I’m so happy to share one of my favourite newborn sessions, and it made it onto Project Nursery, which still makes me smile. My stylist friend Jenny of Forrest & J invited me to her home to photograph baby Sebastian, who everyone calls Bash. I felt honoured to be in that room in those first tender weeks. I shoot up and down the California coast — you can also see a recent San Diego wedding for a different chapter of the same coastline. The nursery mixed beachy boho with laid-back surfer energy, and the light coming through the windows was just right.

A Beachy Boho Nursery Filled with Love and Style
Jenny has an incredible eye for detail, and it shows in every corner of Bash’s nursery. She pulled together bohemian warmth and that easy California surfer feeling without it ever looking forced. The Anthropologie Kumo wallpaper anchors the whole room, and the Amigos De Ahoy rug underneath the crib adds texture and a little colour. She also wove in pieces from the gender reveal and baby shower (custom pillows by KV Threadz, a tiger plush from Anthropologie) so the room already tells a story.
The Crate and Barrel crib and dresser keep things clean and functional at the centre of the room, and a West Elm lamp and Pottery Barn tassel curtains soften the edges. Framed California art by Okay Bear Society and Rachel Quarles’s “High Tides and Beach Baby Vibes” print hang on the walls, celebrating the coast. A wood-burned door sign by Rhythmic Babe and a laser-cut surfboard from Midnight Confetti bring the whole theme home. Every piece earned its place in there.
Capturing Precious Moments with Baby Bash
The moment I walked in, Bash was doing what newborns do best: being impossibly sweet. Jenny and her partner just glowed. I spent the first part of the session photographing those tiny details: the gentle yawns, Bash’s fingers curling around a hand, the quiet expressions that come and go in seconds. That’s the part I never want to rush. The room and the family together made everything feel easy.
Partway through, Bash’s little cousin Maverick showed up, and the whole energy in the room lifted. He brought so much warmth and silliness to the session. Getting the two of them together for a few frames was pure joy. Those unplanned moments are usually the ones families pull out years later and can’t believe they almost didn’t get.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to schedule a newborn photography session?
The first two weeks after birth work best. Babies sleep more deeply then, and you get those curled-up, peaceful poses that are hard to capture later. That said, I’m happy to work with families outside that window. Every baby and every family is different, and we’ll figure out what makes sense for yours.
What should we expect during a newborn photo shoot?
Newborn sessions follow your baby’s lead. I keep the pace slow and the environment calm, so everyone can settle in. We’ll work through a range of shots: close-up detail images, family portraits, styled nursery frames. Siblings and parents are always welcome in the session, and those family moments often turn out to be the ones people treasure most.
How can we prepare our home or nursery for the session?
Good natural light is the most useful thing you can give me. A room with a decent window makes a real difference. Clear away the obvious clutter, but keep the personal touches: the decor that means something, the favourite soft toy, the little details that say something about your family. If you have a styled nursery like Jenny’s, I’ll work those details into the images and let the room tell its own story.
