Some of the most extraordinary weddings I've ever photographed have taken place not at named venues, but at private Malibu estates — exclusive coastal properties that offer a level of intimacy, bespoke design, and sheer natural beauty that simply cannot be replicated elsewhere. Perched above the Pacific, set among the Malibu hills, or tucked into private canyons with sweeping ocean views, these estates host one wedding at a time — and the results are always deeply personal, stunningly beautiful, and entirely unique.
A private estate wedding in Malibu is one of the most extraordinary celebrations you can create. These properties — many of them architectural masterpieces — offer the kind of exclusivity and freedom that traditional venues cannot match. Every aspect of the event is designed specifically for you: the layout, the lighting, the catering, the florals. Just one of the most beautiful properties in one of the world's most beautiful places, dedicated entirely to your wedding day.

Define your requirements – Decide on your guest count, budget, preferred wedding date, and the type of venue you want (oceanfront estate, vineyard, private mansion, garden estate, etc.).
Search wedding venue directories – Websites such as The Knot, WeddingWire, and Here Comes The Guide allow you to filter Malibu venues by style, capacity, and price.
Explore Airbnb and Vrbo, as they often offer estate rentals for large celebrations.
Review photos, pricing, and policies – Check venue websites and reviews to understand rental costs, vendor restrictions, parking arrangements, noise ordinances, and any accommodation options.
Schedule venue tours – Visit your top choices in person or virtually to evaluate the ceremony and reception spaces, views, guest flow, and overall fit for your wedding.
Consult local wedding planners – Malibu-based planners often know about private estates that are not widely advertised and can help identify venues that match your budget and style.
Confirm availability early – Popular Malibu estates can book a year or more in advance, especially for spring and summer weekends.

Malibu Estate Wedding
Private estate weddings in Malibu are typically arranged through specialist venue agents, local event planners, or private property rental companies. Your wedding planner will usually have strong connections in this space.
The best time to get married in Malibu is typically late spring (May–June) or early fall (September–October), when the weather is mild, the scenery is beautiful, and outdoor celebrations are most comfortable. Spring offers lush green hillsides and longer daylight hours, while early fall is known for warm temperatures, clear skies, and some of the most stunning sunsets of the year.
For couples seeking the most reliable weather, September and October are often considered the ideal months, with less coastal fog than early summer and a lower chance of rain than winter. While Malibu is beautiful year-round, summer can bring higher temperatures, larger crowds, and peak-season pricing, while winter months carry a greater risk of rain. Overall, early fall provides the best balance of weather, scenery, and guest experience.
It's helpful to share photos of the property, or a link to its website, the planned layout, and any specific locations or views you'd like to feature. I always request a venue site visit before the wedding day - but if that's not possible I arrive early the day of the wedding to scope everything out.
In some ways yes — private estate weddings require more advance planning to understand the property's layout and light. But the core approach remains the same: arrive early, understand the space, and plan the day's photographic moments in real detail so nothing is left to chance.
