I am thrilled to share the magic behind our very first Pretty Project Workshop, a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and modern elegance, held at the stunning Retreat Malibu in Ventura County, California. Featured on Green Wedding Shoes, the Pretty Project Workshop was inspired by the unforgettable Boho Love Story shoot we hosted last year at Triunfo Creek Vineyards. This time, we elevated the experience by creating a one-day, hands-on workshop designed to empower and educate creatives in the wedding industry through immersive learning and styled shoots.
A Modern Tea Party Experience at Retreat Malibu
Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Malibu’s coastal hills, the Pretty Project Workshop embraced a modern tea party aesthetic with delicate and sophisticated design details. The event was a collaborative endeavor by the talented team at JLN Studios – Jenny, Lisa, and Nicole – who combined their unique talents in styling, photography, and floral design to craft an unforgettable day. Attendees enjoyed expert-led classes covering Styling & Design with Forrest & J, Photography with Wisteria Photography, and Floral Design with The Bloemist, all while soaking in the inspiring surroundings of Retreat Malibu.
Guests started their day with a delicious breakfast and lunch generously provided by Hatch Cafe, fueling creativity and connection. Attendees also received thoughtfully curated swag bags filled with exquisite gifts donated by our gracious sponsors, including Black Twine, Mole Hollow Candles, and Lolli and Pops, among others. Every detail, from the tablescape to the floral arrangements, was carefully designed to inspire and delight.
Crafting Beauty: Design, Florals, and Details
Jenny Leu’s vision for the tea party tablescape was nothing short of spectacular. She artfully sourced modern tabletop elements from Anthropologie and layered in vintage touches from My Lovely Events to create an elegant and inviting atmosphere. Jenny also designed a striking escort display and a custom photo backdrop that became the centerpiece of the styled shoot and a fun photo opportunity for attendees. The backdrop was adorned with lush florals by Nicole Lourie and featured an eye-catching “Wild & Free” neon sign from Neon Dive Bar that added a playful, unexpected pop of color.
Nicole’s floral design was the heart of the workshop. She expertly incorporated cutting-edge floral trends that emphasized depth and texture, using pressed ferns, florals, and climbing palm installations to create a dynamic and wild aesthetic. Her arrangements graced the escort display table and served as the floral workshop station where attendees created their own bouquets. The cosmos-inspired bouquet and floral hair comb perfectly complemented the stunning Orion gown from Watters, worn by our radiant bride model. Our groom’s look was elevated with a custom floral tie and pocket square from Neck & Tie Company, completing the romantic scene.
Additional creative touches came from Christy at Lazy Creative Designs, who handcrafted neon invitation suites, hand-painted menus, and hand-lettered escort pots and signage. The “Love of Sugar” laser cut sign by Creative Amme added a whimsical element to the airstream lounge area, which was beautifully styled by Golden Arrow Events. Their breathtaking balloon installations throughout the venue created an atmosphere of celebration and joy. Sugar Crush Sweets and Elise Cakes delivered a stunning selection of desserts that delighted all attendees, while Kelly Balch Video captured every behind-the-scenes moment to preserve the memories of this inspiring day.
An Unforgettable Day of Learning and Celebration
The Pretty Project Workshop was more than just a styled shoot — it was an enriching experience where industry creatives connected, learned, and celebrated their shared passion. After an inspiring day of workshops and collaboration, we gathered in the airstream lounge for a heartfelt farewell toast sponsored by Black Twine. To conclude the day, I had the pleasure of capturing intimate sunset portraits of our bride and groom models in the Malibu hills, creating secret moments of magic that perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the workshop.
We are incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed their talents and energy to make this event a success. Working alongside such gifted creatives was truly inspiring, and we cannot wait to host the Pretty Project Workshop again this Fall.
